Our Projects

PRESENT

Lango Together Through COVID-19 (LTTC) is bringing us together by making full use of the skills, volunteers, and resources of our community. The program is a coordinated response of support for the most vulnerable people in our community, including the elderly, sick, housebound, and those affected in other ways by the COVID crisis.

Over the various waves of the pandemic, we have been:

  • Delivering food parcels and other essentials to the affected.

  • Befriending vulnerable and isolated people (including those shielding) and running errands for them.

  • Encouraging and guiding members to keep active with physical exercise, despite restrictions and lockdowns.

  • Inviting professionals to lead virtual workshops on resilience and well-being, as well as coping with anxiety, stress, and bereavement.

  • Leading storytelling sessions (“Wi-Otem”, traditional campfire narratives common in Lango, Uganda) and social events to ease loneliness. [Wi-Otem with Adwong Moi depicted.]

  • Directing members to other support services available locally.

With your donations, we procured food crop seeds for those most affected by the COVID-19 crisis in Northern Uganda (the elderly, people living with disabilities, single mothers, child mothers, orphans, etc.) to prevent long-term famine. The seeds, including various beans, maize, simsim, millet, and sorghum, were distributed during the rainy season of August to November 2020.

Through a community appeal launched in July 2020, Lango Association UK raised over £3000 from over 100 supporters. The donations raised have so far benefited more than 300 people and counting. We need your help to continue this project and help prevent further famine in the region.

Geoffrey, Chairman Board of Trustees speaking during the Launch of Science Equipment and Book Project in December 2019.LAUK has secured some medical devices, laboratory equipment, and science books to benefit health centres and up to 20 secondary schools in Northern and Eastern Uganda. The project is also raising funds to acquire dental equipment. This project was launched by HE. Ambassador Julius Moto, the Ugandan High Commissioner to UK on the 7th of December 2020.

Currently the project has raised over £1,200 of the expected £9,000 target. Please donate today to help us reach this goal.

FUTURE

DENTAID Project:

dentaid box.jpg

LAUK is working with Dentaid UK through a fundraising drive to ship portable dental equipment capable of setting up a single dental surgery all packed in a DentaidBox. It includes a fully adjustable dental chair, a pressure cooker for sterilising instruments, a range of instruments, and oral health education resources. For a £1,500 sponsorship excluding shipping, Dentaid will support LAUK to supply a Dentaid Box for shipping to Lira, Uganda. We will raise funds for shipping the donated equipment from Dentaid, expected to cost £1000 with an additional £500 to help set up the distribution unit in the designated location in Lira.

Dentaid Boxes have been used for clinics in refugee camps across other countries, including Malawi, Zambia, Guinea, Cambodia, Cameroon and Vanuatu. Help us make this project a reality by donating today.

Uganda is ranked among the world’s poor nations. With the current population of 45.57 million (Worldometer, 2020), 38% of the population is living on less than $1.25 per day; 65% of the entire population under the age of 24 years faces complex challenges such as lacking healthcare, hygiene, and clean water; facing unemployment, food insecurity, and a high rate of maternal child death. With your help, LAUK can alleviate some of these struggles by providing affordable dental care.

Dental care is one of the most urgent unmet healthcare needs among the local population in Lira, Northern Uganda. This is due to a lack of facilities and equipment, a lack of qualified providers and carers, and general poverty, among others. There has been no concentrated support in the region aimed at improving this aspect of health, which has resulted in a high incidence of dental and oral diseases. The local clinic under the District Health Services does not meet the population’s growing need.

LAUK has, on a small scale, operated outreach camps mostly providing dental education to local schools and the neighbouring population with the aim of early intervention. This has involved interns from Mulago Dental School and friends of LAUK providing financial support. We aim to set up comprehensive and preventive dental care that meets all the guidelines set by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council. This should improve access, reduce the rate of diseases (especially among the younger population) through preventive health education in remote villages. This project is supported by the government’s early intervention program.

PAST

LAUK coordinated a community response to raise funds and support grassroots communities affected by famine in Northern Uganda. The Hunger Appeal Project raised funds to procure Maize Flour and Beans, which are major food items in the area, and to distribute them to the most affected.
